Vocational Tech School - Ablekuma Village

Ablekuma Village is located in the northwestern part of the capital Accra surrounded by a number of other villages. Managed by a chief, elders and a town development committee; the village lacks many basic amenities i.e. water, electricity and telephones.

In 1988 the village made a passionate appeal to the Anglican Diocese of Accra for help. The Diocese of Accra financially poor took up the challenge but has struggled in responding to the call.

St. Justin's school in Ablekuma was established to fight illiteracy and degradation. Named after St. Justin a Christian Apologist interested in education. School started with approximately 200 students. The idea was while a school was being developed, belief in God would spread throughout.

Today, the child population has grown to approximately 3,000 which includes children from the surrounding villages. The available facilities cannot handle the growing number of children. Child labor threatens education ?Äì parents are not eager to support their children furthering their education; low income families (who work primarily in sand winning and stone quarry) encourage their children to take menial jobs which earn little income.

Branches of The Vine is partnering with The Diocese of Accra to answer the call. To establish a vocational training school which will allow children to continue their education develop skills and provide a living.
